The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is fast approaching and the whole of the UK seems to be bustling with excitement. Red, white and blue bunting can be seen hung across the streets and the Queen’s face is being plastered on cakes, masks, and head-pieces.
Queen Elizabeth II has been celebrating her Jubilee since 1977 and much like VE Day, the Queen’s Jubilee is a much-celebrated holiday for Brits.
However, whether everyone will be painting the UK flag on their cheeks this upcoming weekend is up for debate.
According to Statista, 41% of 18-24 year-olds think the monarchy should be replaced with an elected head of state, whilst only 31% want to keep the monarchy.

A similar study from YouGov showed that 53% of adults between the ages of 15-49 support the monarchy, this is 5% down from 2019. The older generation remains firm on their trust in the monarch with 70% of 50-64-year-olds still supporting the monarchy, which is the same as in 2019.

Bloom took to the High Street to find out why the people of Cheltenham thought this distrust in the monarchy was, and whether we would see many young people celebrating the upcoming Jubilee.
Emma and Louise, students at Stroud High School, claim that the reason why so many young people don’t trust the monarchy is that it seems like the Queen "is not needed" and she "doesn’t do much".
University student Emma agrees with their point stating that it "costs too much of taxpayers money." Although Emma recognises this drop she said that she doesn’t believe that the monarchy will go away any time soon because of the money brought in by tourism.
However, Cheltenham local Matthew thinks the problem is more specific: “The only thing I can think of is the recent Prince Andrew revelations.”
Matthew said he thinks he’ll see the younger generation partying on the Jubilee weekend.
“I think young people would celebrate a dog’s birthday if they could, so I think they’d celebrate at any excuse."
Despite the uncertainty, there are plenty of celebrations geared towards the younger generation, including Cheltenham's local club MooMoo, which is running a Queen-themed Jubilee party.
